We don't often find occasion to use the words "bad ass" and "nun" in the same sentence, but with all due respect, in the case of Sister Corita, the term certainly applies. After joining the Catholic church at the age of 18, Sister Corita spent the next 30 years teaching and making artwork whose bright colors and bold statements (often from the Bible, but sometimes from Madison Avenue as well) caught the eyes of such mid-century giants as the Eames' and Saul Bass. Her fearless appropriation of disparate artistic techniques helped her create one of the most unique and delightful visual styles to emerge from the 1960s. Graphic designer, propagandist, outsider artist, Catholic nun Sister Corita was a tough one to put a label on, which makes her story and her work all the more fascinating and inspirational.
